Top Ten In Demand Programming Languages for 2011

For this blog post I did a little research and weighed in some critical points on online forums. But this List is based mostly on the the demand of the IT industry here in the Philippines and most of the neighboring countries. So without further ado, here are the list of programming languages that made it to my top 10.

10. COBOL - Ok, before anyone complains we all know that cobol is one of the oldest language in the industry but what a few of the new generation programmers don't know is that it is still in the business for a reason, Reliability. Many of the banking industries and other businesses still rely on COBOL for running their systems and the fact that those who know the language is decreasing increases its demand overall.

9. PERL - One of the few programming languages to slowly take over the market is PERL. Dubbed as the one to replace COBOL, PERL is slowly becoming the preferred language because of its flexibility compared to other programming languages. The only reason it still ranks low because it is relatively new to the market.

8. Visual Basic- Like the BASIC programming language, Visual Basic was designed to be easily learned and used by beginner programmers. It is one of the first languages to implement GUI interfaces therefore it is included as one of the most in demand languages. When businesses want a great interactive interface VB is one to be counted on.

7. JavaScript - With the actionscript(flash) language slowly becoming obsolete. Javascript has taken over its thrown over the scripting language for web developers for a good reason. Its fast, takes less memory space and is very flexible when it comes to creating scripts specially with the birth of HTML and CSS5. A good web developer should include javascript in its list of arsenals.

6. C/C++We know they are not the same language, though C++ builds on C and began as an extension of the C language. Though sometimes viewed as "nichey," C++ is widely used in the software industry. And having knowledge about C or C++ should be handy when it comes to job hunting.

5. C# - One of the programming languages developed by Microsoft and is also becoming popular in the IT industry. What gives C# the edge is its .NET framework which makes its overall development easier for programmers and saves the overall cost of implementation for the IT industry.

4. Ruby - Ruby is a language of careful balance. Its creator, Yukihiro "Matz" Matsumoto blended parts of his favorite languages (Perl, Smalltalk, Eiffel, Ada and Lisp) Therefore birthing into a language that has all the good things of its predecessors. This type of language is becoming popular in various gaming companies here in the Philippines.
